Today I wanted to cover a topic that is growing in popularity. That topic is the new, supposedly long kept secret device, the DIY Magnet generator. More importantly I want to answer the answer the question: Do magnet generators work?

The short answer is no – they don’t.  I’m going to clarify this in a moment, but if you want a DIY way to actually power you home, you should be looking at solar or wind power. You can read about the top five solar and wind power guides here.  The idea of a magnet generator is kind of neat, but a magnet generator is not going to be useful for powering your home (or for much else for that matter).

Unfortunately the growth in popularity (I heard from a friend of a friend kind of thing) is leading many consumers to get ripped off by a number of scam guides that supposedly hold the answer to their power problems.

Before we clarify this, let’s just talk logic for a second. If someone had actually discovered a way to generate power for a home, where all that was needed was a little time and $100 in parts, do you really think they’d be selling $30 – $50 guides on the Internet?

Of course they wouldn’t.   Power companies and homeowners alike would be scrambling to get their magnet generators, and the inventor of such a device would be both rich and famous. With that out of the way, let’s cover magnet generators.

What is a Magnet Generator

Magnet generators come in two flavours. The first is the perpetual motion generator. Perpetual motion has been a scientific misnomer since 1196 or so. The other type, and this is the newer version that is misleading homeowners, uses a motor to power the generator. The idea with this more modern version of the magnet generator is that you use a motor to spin your magnet generator.

Spinning a magnet around a semi-conductor does generate power. This is the same principle that wind turbine motors use to generate energy.

The problem with attempting to use a power in, power out, configuration in a magnet generator is that the device would consistently use more power than it produced.  The idea can be compared to spinning your wind turbine generator with an electric drill. Sure it generates electricity, but you drill will use more power than the turbine is producing.

As children, we are taught that it is impossible to see the wind but we know it is there because of the warm breeze on our faces and the rustling of the tree limbs.  So it is the effect that it has on other surfaces that we can visibly see.  In the “greening” of our planet, wind mills have been used in foreign countries as an energy source.  Today, the vertical axis wind turbine which is often referred to as VAWT is providing an alternative energy source for homeowners around the world and growing in popularity daily.  This relates to saving the eco-system in that less electricity is needed to power the usage allotment for the residence.

The vertical axis wind turbine/VAWT is constructed of materials that one could easily find at a home improvement facility, such as the wood for the turbine blades or wings and the aluminum necessary to cover these.  The alternator is comprised of two magnets placed in between steel discs.  The magnets and copper wiring could be found at an electrical supply company.  Another wooden disc is used for a foundation for the copper wires.  All three are then attached to the shaft to which the wings are attached.  When this is completed, it is time to attach this assembly to the frame and weld the wings to the arms and attach a stabilizing system as basic as cables and sandbags.

There are kits that are available for the individual who wants to get right to the business at hand and not be inconvenienced by shopping for all the parts.  There are several web sites which have excellent offers.  These are basic beginnings toward saving our energy resources and as there is no charge for the wind, make it your goal to save what we can today.

Is wind power generation really possible in residential areas? Many homeowners have watched their power bills grow increasingly higher every year. Despite the fact many continue to pay their outrageous electric bill with out realizing the power used at home can be produced for free no questions asked. So you want to know how to build your own wind power generations system for your residence? To do this you will need to place the turbine on a high tower allowing it the maximum kinetic energy from wind. You may also want to consider the vertical axis turbine for those living in highly populated residential areas. For the simple fact it may not be entirely possible to build a high enough tower to place a horizontal turbine one in your area. The typical horizontal turbine tower needs to be anywhere from 80 to 130 feet high. So if you can not get that type of clearance in your residential area a vertical axis turbine would be better suited for you. All though keep in mind vertical axis turbines typically don’t produce as much kinetic energy for there is a lot of drag from these wind generators.

If you are one of the lucky ones who do not use much power or built a large enough wind turbine generation system. That you do not use all the power produced by your turbine.
